Evita
Penn's Landing Playhouse
211 South Columbus Philadelphia
With a stunning score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the famed lyrics of Tim Rice, the compelling true story of Eva Perón -- the controversial first lady of Argentina -- comes to vivid life on stage at Penn's Landing Playhouse, complete with a 19-piece orchestra and a cast of more than 20. Filled with showstoppers like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," Evita follows a peasant girl as she uses her considerable smarts to rise from the slums of Argentina to become the wife of the President and a powerful advocate for the working class. Though she was much beloved by her people as the voice of the poor, her inevitable downfall came through her unwavering ambition and a devastating illness, making her one of history's most tragic and dramatic figures. The musical's haunting score fuses dramatic chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, to create an extraordinary theatrical portrait that burns as bright as Evita herself.
